Chicago Criterium

race1.jpg For our Sunday morning photo outing we went to Grant Park this morning to catch a little of the Chicago Criterium. I think I was the only one excited to see a race there, but soon my son and my uncle were really enjoying the event.

My son got all excited when he saw the hay bales on Michigan Ave. He thought for sure there would be a crash he could get photos of. I had to burst his bubble and tell him they were just safey bales and he more than likely wouldn’t see anything like that. While I don’t race, the the weather seemed very good for racing. I have a small gallery of the photos I took if you want to see some more.

It was a very fun morning. I wish we could have stayed there longer though, I would have really like to have seen more races. I will clear the day next time though, that’s for sure! If you have never seen one of these races, I would highly recommend you check one out.

Having never shot a bike race I did a little looking around to see what the normal type shots were. I liked the shots using a panning technique the most and tried my hand at that. I started out with some group shots of the racers coming around a small turn and then I tried my Sigma 50mm and the 18-70mm Nikon kit lens for the pan shots. I liked the way the 50mm shots looked but it was sort of hard to get any decent shots due to the closeness of the subjects. I could only get one rider in the frame so I switched to the kit lens and went a little wider. In the gallery I linked to you will see the results. I hope you like them!
