Family Night With the Bears

We haven’t made it out to Bourbannais for Bears camp yet so we decided to head up to Soldier Field to see the Bears.

Family Night turned out to be more fun than I thought it would. There was a band playing outside the stadium and quite a few vendors to check out.

We had nosebleed seats but they weren’t all that bad. Good view of the field. Watching the practice was sort of like watching paint dry from that distance though. It did get a little more interesting once they started the 7 on 7 and 11 on 11 drills though.

There was a fireworks show right after the practice. Great show. It was right on top of us! We were in the north end zone and they were launching them from right outside the stadium!

We parked in the south lot and it was total gridlock. Everyone was in good spirits ‘cept for the woman who kept laying on her horn. I thought it was just someone messing around but when she got near us you could clearly see she was dead serious on getting out of that lot. She must not get out much.

Overall, it was a good Friday night. I hope we can get down to camp so I can get some better pictures of the players. We’ll see….

Spring Tease?

You gotta love March! It’s that time of year when you know warmer weather is on its way but just aren’t quite sure when it will actually show up. Tuesday we got a taste of whats to come. Mid 50′s for the first time in a long long time! A little rain, but who cares? Mid 50′s!

While I am by no stretch of the imagination a bird watcher or photographer, I have always liked knowing what wildlife lives or visits my neck of the woods.

I stopped by my friend Wannetta yesterday to see how she was doing. Wannetta is a big time birder and loves to hike all over with her faithful companion Logan. She said that a couple hundred Sandhill Cranes were over at the wetlands Monday evening and that she was going to stop over there in the afternoon to see if they were still there. I told her I might stop by too and see what was happening. Before I left, I just had to make a picture of Logan. He was kind enough to hop up on the picnic table for a quicky portrait. I only had my camera with 1 sb600 but I think it worked ok. Logan is a great dog. He loves to fetch stuff and is always trying to drag huge branches around. Pretty funny to watch that! I think he would be a very good frisbee dog. Very agile and quick. Good lookin too!

New Years Day at the Beach?

New Years Day Polar Plunge

Click on the Polar Bears for more pictures!

What a way to start the New Year! Nothing like a quick swim in Lake Michigan to get your motor running. Did I mention it was only 11f  out today?

The polar plunge, hosted by the Chicago Polar Bear Club, kicked off a little before noon today without a hitch. While I had no desire to hop in, a whole bunch of people did just that! I couldn’t believe how many people showed up and actually went for a swim. Craziness I tell ya! This was a fun event. Everyone seemed to have a great time and the expressions were great. I look forward to the big event in March.

A Walk in the Woods

without comments

20090613-_dsc2511 I don’t live that far from the woods and try to get over there whenever possible. If I don’t plan on making photos I ride my bike, and if I do, I walk. On and off the trails. It is a nice place to visit and there is all kinds of wildlife to be seen in any season. Birds, insects, snakes, a fox or two, many deer, turtles, bullfrogs, and the beavers, just to name a few.

I never remember the official name of this forest preserve. A few years back we just started calling it “The Beaver Pond”. There is a shallow pond, surrounded by dead or dying trees, that is home to a few beavers.  It is teaming with wildlife and is a lot of fun to see all the migratory birds stop by for a few days to visit. I had to buy a bird identification book just to keep up with them!

It has been a really lousy spring in northern Illiniois this year. A lot of rain and cool temperatures. This weather has not only messed with the farmers, it seems to have thrown the wildlife off a little too. While the geese seemed to stay on schedule with their young ones, everyone else seems to be a little late this year. The pond is teaming with all kinds of nesting birds. The blue birds are trying their best to keep down the bug population. They are always in continuous motion. The woodpeckers are busy going back and forth with food for the kids. It would seem that every tree has few families living in it. Sort of like a bird apartment complex in each tree. A pretty busy place!
