Let it Snow!

Not much to type about but I thought I would share some snow pictures with you. It would appear that the midwest was spared this year. Seems pretty normal compared to the east coast. But then again, they seem to whine a little more about snow over there! ;)

Weekend Variety

This was a fun weekend! I like variety and this weekend I got to make pictures of a bunch of different events.

Friday night was the Lincolnway Central vs Lincolnway East Hockey game. Also Senior Night for these schools. Once again, Bobby Hull was there signing autographs. I had made an 8×10 print of a picture of Kieran and Bobby from last year for him to autograph. He got a kick out of it and Kieran was pretty pumped about it! I also made a picture of the 2 of them for next year!  He is a very nice guy.

I went last year and it was packed. This year was no different. What’s cool about this is the energy level. These schools take hockey pretty seriously and it shows. The crowd was really into it and so were the players. There was some serious banging going on from the 1st faceoff on. Some great goaltending on both ends but in the end, East took the trophy. Thanks to Head Coach Bill Hetfleisch, I got to spend the game on the bench and had a great ongoing conversation with Ed Herbert, the goalie coach, between shots. Great night to say the least!

After the hockey game I shot over to the Charlie Horse to see a few people that I went to HS with. That was fun! I hadn’t seen a few of the girls since HS and it was great to see them again. No pictures there though. Just a little catching up!

New Years Day at the Beach?

New Years Day Polar Plunge

Click on the Polar Bears for more pictures!

What a way to start the New Year! Nothing like a quick swim in Lake Michigan to get your motor running. Did I mention it was only 11f  out today?

The polar plunge, hosted by the Chicago Polar Bear Club, kicked off a little before noon today without a hitch. While I had no desire to hop in, a whole bunch of people did just that! I couldn’t believe how many people showed up and actually went for a swim. Craziness I tell ya! This was a fun event. Everyone seemed to have a great time and the expressions were great. I look forward to the big event in March.

Grant Park in February

without comments

obamadimomal-1.jpg …isn’t usually all that interesting. But it would appear that the times, they are a changin! This Saturday we met up again with the Chicagoland Digital Photography meetup group and headed  to the southern part of Grant Park  to see if Snow Days Chicago would be more fun than last weeks Frozen Fun Fest. There was a lot to look forward to. Snow sculptures, dogsled demonstrations, and snowboarding were promised and were we surprised!

I have never seen sculptures like this before. The detail was incredible, as was the creativity of the artists. Every sculpture was amazing. I made a few passes just to look again! It was interesting to see how intricate something created out of snow could get and each artist really pushed things to the limit that’s for sure.

After checking out all the sculptures, we headed over to the dogsled demonstration. The dogs were all ready to go and were just sitting/laying around. There was a lady there with one group of dogs that was kind enough to answer every question thrown her way. What a trooper! What a great looking group of dogs too let me tell you. They were pretty laid back but you could tell they were ready to roll. Unfortunately there was no snow for them to run on so instead of using a sled, the dogs pulled a rolling sled. I saw a similar sled in Frankfort a few weeks ago and those things really move. With 4 huskies pulling one of these sleds, they really moved! It was fun to watch and fun to learn more about the dogs.

The snowboarding wasn’t going to start until 6pm so we blew that one off. Probably a good thing though because it would have gotten very crowded on that corner.

On our way back towards the sculptures we discoverd that Scooby Doo and his crew were floating around somewhere! We saw the van but never did see any of them though. We made another pass around to see if we missed anything and then met up with everyone for lunch. I am really starting to like meeting up with this group. The conversation is always good and everyone is pretty darn cool! After a few slices of pizza and good conversation, we all parted ways.

All in all, it was a fun day and it would be hard to judge which event was more fun. They were both well organized and had a lot to look at but I think I would have to give Snow Days the nod. Those artists were great!

Frozen Fun Festival

without comments

frozen-2.jpg We ventured up to Millenium Park this past weekend to meet up with some fellow photographers from the Chicagoland Digital Photography Meetup Group to shoot at the Frozen Fun Festival. It is always fun to meet up with this group. Very cool people and the destinations are always interesting.

What was more interesting was the weather. We got up there early and it was already in the 60′s! I talked with one of the ice sculptors and he just rolled his eyes. They had to reorder ice slabs for the portraits and the ice maze was closed due to the fact that it was melting! I didn’t see anyone complaining though, and the kids sure looked like they were having a blast!

The cool thing about Millenium Park though is if you can’t find something to photograph, you just aren’t looking! People pictures galore and one of the coolest skylines in the world. Not to mention the Bean.

Everyone met back up and we went to the Corner Bakery for a bite to eat. Kieran became an instant fan of the Lemon Bars! Most everyone was staying put to shoot the Michigan Ave fireworks but we had to blast home in order to shoot a hockey game in Orland Park. I hope they have another fireworks meetup in the future. Some of the posted photos looked really nice!

This weekend we are heading back to check out Snow Days Chicago. This looks like it could be a lot of fun. Hope to see you there!

You can see some of the photos from Frozen Fun Fest here if you want. Thanks for looking!

Sunday at Breidert Green

without comments

On Sunday, Kieran and I took a ride out to Frankfort, Illinois. Why you ask? Ice Fest of course!

Nice event for a Sunday afternoon. There were ice sculptors, trolley rides, and  the Illinois Alaskan Malamute Rescue Association provided free dog sled rides for the kids. And the weather was great! There were smiles all around and the kids seemed to be having a lot of fun.

I know in my last post I had stated that I was going to try and get away from taking a lot of animal photos but I couldn’t help myself! The dogs were great and they seemed to be having as much fun as the kids!
